Ok i have to travel 5 hrs on saturday to do my sisters waterpump in her 92 lumina. She doesnt know which motor she has. Either the 2.5 or the 3.1. I know where the pumps are on each motor. I know how to remove them and what not. However i have never done one on either motor. Is there anything i should prepare for? Anything to make sure to bring with me? Any tips or anything would be appreciated. Thanx

The water pump on the 2.5 is a 2-piece deal. The housing mounts to the front of the block with 2 or 3 bolts , and the pump itself mounts to the left side of the housing (with several bolts around the perimiter.) The best way to change the pump is to remove the complete housing from the block, then remove the pump from the housing while it's out of the car. The housing gasket usually goes bad, so that's why I say remove the complete housing so you can prevent future problems by replacing the gasket.

you'll need a 10mm, a 13 mm, a 12mm and posibly a 15 mm in socket and wrench form, some plyers, a gasket scraper and screwdrivers. You'll have to remove any acessories that mount to it. Its about like taking one of a small block chevy or simular v8 and shouldn't be horribly difficult. The pulleys bolt on.

The pully is a bit tricky if the bolts are on tight, cause it's always wanting to turn on you. Solution- losen it with the belt on ;)

Scrape off as much gasket as you can, and its also good to apply RV Sealant (I think thats what its called.. its blue stuff) that will double protect against any possible leaks.

if that doesn't work, you can use a long nose pliers as a spanner wrench to keep the pulley from turning while you loosen the bolts. or use a strap wrench. good luck.

well the water pump was froze up solid and the belt tensioner had just plain melted into a blob, so i did the pulley and the pump in about 25 min.....thanx for all the help it was greatly appreciated. As for the list of sizes for tools, ya forgot the 8-9mm for the water pump bolts.......lucky standard sizes fit pretty close.....

So you say there was a tensioner? Well that would make the motor a 3.1 for sure. 2.5's used a V belt around the crank, water pump, and PS pump, another V belt around the crank and AC compressor, and a "serpentine" style belt from the water pump to the Alternator...

disco, later year iron dukes used a serpentine setup. all iron duke luminas used serpentine as well as my cutlass ciera did (1990).
Hot damn! I had no idea the 'Dukes switched over to a serp belt. Now that I think about it, every 'Duke I've ever worked on were pre-89.
