TGP engine or 3400 swap?

  1. 1. TGP engine or 3400 swap?

    • just use the TGP engine & parts i already have
    • sell the TGP stuff and buy a 3400!

now that i have my GTS running good, i would like to start work on my Cutlass Supreme. right now it has a toasted clutch, so the engine & transmission are coming out soon. now, i have this blown TGP engine sitting in my garage. my plans were to just bolt all of the TGP turbo stuff onto my current 227,000 mile NA 3.1 'T' engine and run minimum boost. i'm sure it would blow up quickly, which is the fun part. i have no use for the NA 3.1 and i'm not going to store it or rebuild it anyway. in the meantime my TGP 'V' engine would be getting rebuilt with .020 over Mahle pistons, new gaskets, valvetrain, oil pump etc etc....pretty much a stock rebuild besides the overbore.

but lately i have been thinking of just getting rid of all of my TGP parts and buy a 3400 instead. 3400 engines are cheap! i would probably just run the engine on my current 3.1 MPFI/5-speed memcal, wiring harness and ECM. i would definately turbocharge it later down the road, but the 3400 swap would give me alot of gain immediately not to mention turbocharging it later would be killer in comparison to a TGP engine. and heck, selling my TGP parts could help pay for the 3400.

what do you guys think? i'm going to be using the Getrag 282 either way of course.

i know i'm probably going to sound like a wuss, but i would rather not deal with rebuilding the TGP engine (or any engine for that matter). it costs alot in parts and machine work and is just a big hassle altogether. i bought this TGP engine in June '03 thinking i'd just do the head gaskets but unfortunately i found a hole in one of the pistons :? and that put my TGP powered Cutlass project on hold indefinately...i pretty much forgot about the project after that and started working on my GTS instead (which is pretty much done for now).

a low mileage 3400 would be a drop-in and probably cost less considering i wouldn't have to rebuild it.

i am really leaning towards the 3400 if you can't tell

I vote TGP engine + 3400 topend swap.

i thought about that but i think i'd probably just go 100% 3400 instead.

and if i do drop a 3400 in there, it WILL be turbocharged...just not right away. i would keep my TGP exhaust manifolds (albeit modify them if that's possible) and TGP crossover pipe, along with my TGP radiator and intercooler.

can anyone tell me what keywords i should use on ebay when searching for a complete low mileage 3400? i only found one...i must be doing something wrong? it should be possible to find one for under $500 not including shipping right?

3.4 DOHC would be cool too, but they aren't as easy to find. besides, the 3400 will give me more room in the engine compartment and the 3400 is generally more of a maintenance free engine. if i were to get a DOHC i would just go find a car that already has one. unfortunately, i can't buy another project car, i already have two :P

thanks for the replies

cool i'll check that out. i found a 3400 sitting in a totalled '99 GA SE at a local body shop. the car has been there for at least 8 months or so. the engine looked really clean, not sure about miles. i'm going to ask about it today.

it's a small bodyshop out by V1 Propane (out towards the airport). i deliver pizza out to a trailer court out there every once in awhile and i know the car has been there since last spring at least. there is no hood on the car so i was able to get a somewhat close look at it. the bodyshop was closed at the time though.

Hey josh mr r's is showing at least one. I just checked 99 ga's, didn't say the mileage. They probaly want alot for it like they did for that bonni engine.

yeah it's probably a safe bet they want way too much. they used to sell parts cheap, but after awhile things became expensive. they don't even let people walk out into thier yard now :?

no 3400 turbo was ever made from the factory. there are parts from the TGP setup that can be used with a 3400 though, such as ECM/memcal, wiring harness, rad/IC, and possibly the exhaust manifolds and crossover pipe after some modification.

Ram Air is more of a gimmick or a marketing tool than anything else (IMO). i wouldn't bother trying to add it to a W-body.
