harrydunn Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 A little off base from the usual questions I'm sure, but here goes. I recently went thru the process of losing my car keys (spares too!--see previous post) and intend never to do so again. I'm a little hesitant to put a spare on the outside of the car anywhere but wondered if you guys had any suggestions. I did find one of those magnetic key holders laying around in my closet. I was planning on keeping (hiding) the ignition key inside somewhere as well. Your thoughts and NO! you can't have my address where I keep the car so don't even ask! Thanks. By the way, Ace Hardware can make ignition and door keys much cheaper than any dealer. Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 I've always hid them somewhere in my bedroom (where I'll KNOW I can find them again) or given them to a family member or friend. This summer in CA I gave them to my gf's parents in case they needed to move my car when I wasn't there (it was parked in the driveway circle). Quote

harrydunn Posted October 18, 2004 Author Report Posted October 18, 2004 Thanks for the replies guys. I should have made myself more clear. I would prefer to put them on the car somewhere and was wondering if anyone had suggestions. Thanks again. I'd hate to be 100's of miles away from my spares. Ouch. Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted October 18, 2004 Report Posted October 18, 2004 I've never heard of anyone keeping their spare keys on the outside of the car. It seems like a thief would look around and easliy find them. Interesting idea though. Quote
runt Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 Get a ignition key and put it in the glove box in the owners manual, or somewhere else where only YOU know it would be. As for the door key, just make a copy and put it in your wallet. I did that for awhile, but now I just use my keyless entry, and if the batts go dead I still have the door key. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 My "spare" set are on my wife's key ring, and vice versa . I keep an extra car door key in my wallet in case I accidentally lock my keys inside the car... Quote
Baddflash Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 The original owners of my old cutlass had a spare set in the middle of a wod of playdo or something of the sort. They had it hidden inside the gas door, I didn't know it was there for 2 years till I was painting the car. I think it was a good idea cause if I hadn't painted the car or had someone else do it I would have never known they were there. Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 I've got 1 lock and 1 ignition on my regular keyring, 1 lock in my wallet, 1 ignition on a keyring in my room, and 1 of each on a keyring in our junk drawer in our kitchen with the rest of the family's spare keys.. I've thought about keeping a spare door key under the car somewhere but I'm kinda sketchy about someone finding it or it falling off and not being there when I need it. A good place to keep a spare ignition key in the car, at least in mine, I'd say would be under the center console.. towards the very front under the dash it's open on the end, could tape one up in there and just reach in a grab it. Not exactly an apparent opening so I wouldn't be worried about someone finding it. Either that or remove the glove box and drop a set down with the fuse box. (in early CS's anyway) Quote
harrydunn Posted October 19, 2004 Author Report Posted October 19, 2004 Well, I see the the interior of the console has a rubber mat in it. I've stuck the ignition key under that for the time being. I was also thinking about sticking one under the hood somewhere but am a little leary to with a $35 key. The door key's going in the wallet. Thanks guys. Quote
harrydunn Posted October 19, 2004 Author Report Posted October 19, 2004 I should say the same ignition key, not another second ignition key. Let's not get carried away here! Quote
J Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 a few of my friends have thier zip tied under the car where they can reach it and cut of off if need be. Some have done this under the trunk area and other up in front by the rad core support. Quote
Dirty Rockstar Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 I throw mny spares in the top drawer of my dresser.. Along with my set to dad's car.. I know where it is.. And Thats all that matters.. Quote

I also have mine attached to my wallet. I don't have an ignition key in there cause I figure if I lose the keys it will most likely be IN the car anyways.... I keep my other full set in the house (beside my mini system right now currently) Quote

GP1138 Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 I keep an extra car door key in my wallet in case I accidentally lock my keys inside the car... I've used it quite a few times, as well. Quote
Kalgorn Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 Someone told me that I should keep a spare set in one of those magnet boxes under my car and I said "fuck no". I just don't feel safe keeping a spare set of keys (or even just the door key) outside of my car. It seems too easy for a thief to find. I have a spare set of door and ignition in my wallet. Quote
harrydunn Posted October 19, 2004 Author Report Posted October 19, 2004 Believe it or not, they actually had the correct plastic covered Pass-II ignition keys! I couldn't believe it myself. He stuck my original key in a little machine to get the correct resistor number and viola! Ran outside to try it before I paid and it fit like a glove and started right up. You think that's bad, you can't even get a plastic-headed key for a 91-94 Cavalier at the dealer, let alone a locksmith or hardware store. Stealth Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 I had a bare metal dulicate key there was nothign wrong with it, until my girlfriend put it in the door and broke it off cause she thought it was the door key Quote
KING JOKER Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 i have found that hiding the key up in the front bumper to be effective. i made a custom key holder on the inside of the front bumper cover that is accessable if you know how to get to it. been there for 3 years and never needed to use it. slick Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 We have a key hanger here in our apartment with all of our spare keys. Works out nicely. Quote
GPRACER Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 I am horrible for losing keys, can be costly. I have about 8 sets kicking around. Quote
jeremy Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 I have a spare set of car keys in armrest incase I lose my main keys.....I never lock the car so I don't have to worry about being locked out.... Quote
HokemBokem Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 Yea i had two sets of keys until last week when i went to go start my car and it didnt start because the chip in that key had worn out. So now im using my spare and if the chip goes out in this one im screwed. I think i better amke a trip to the dealer for another set here soon. Quote
