Thumper!: UPDATE

skiiirt

Recommended Posts

well on my way to lunch from school I hit my brakes coming up to an intersection and BANG then my car swerves to the right. Followed by 50% brake loss. Then the thumping noise begins. Its obviously the left driver side front brake but what about it is the question. I hear a thump with every revolution. I towed the car to my mechanic. Here we go again

Well, Brake Job are the first two word that come to my mind. you could have blown out a brake hose on one side, plus if you have the 1st gen rear brakes, you may have one warped front rotor doing all of your braking. If you have the money, I would suggest replacing all 4 rotors and all 4 calipers (or at least the 2 in the rear). I did that to my 88 regal, and the brakes were phenomenal. I had to get used to not locking up all 4 wheels in sudden stops.

i'd put my money on a busted calliper bolt

I had the same thing happen on one of my old cars.....ended up the caliper bolt just fell out :!: :!: :!: :!:

Thank god. thats exactly what he said (mechanic). I dont exactly have the money but thats what credit is for, and it's payday today. I been thinkin about these brakes for some time now. I was told the original owner replaced the brakes.. but anyone can guess what he meant by that. And what breaks he replaced is another question I have no paperwork of them doing that so it could be brake pads or something silly

I pray to oldsmobile gods and ransom eli, that my cutty doesnt have major work ahead of it.

i noticed how much of a difference the pre 95's are to the 95+ w-bodies

its really SAD seeing what the rotors (brakes) used to look like and shit (at least the setup...)

I shit my pants.

UPDATE

Got back from the mechanic. He showed me the rotors. The middle piece

bmw_e46_rotors.jpg

broke off completely. He said due to rust. daamn I never heard of that happening before

technaically a "hat" if your looking for the word to defines "the middle part"

um, but yeah, that is pretty odd...

as for the good news, time for new calipers rotors and pads :D ....

at least you know your brakes will be good.

Broken hat is not all that uncommon, I've seen it many times, especially on 4-WD trucks.

most 4wd trucks have a different style rotor.

our cars are hubless..

most 4wd trucks ahve the hubs built right in the intire rotor...

so are you talking about foriegn 4wd vehicals? cause i don't have much experience with that, and i imagine they would be the only ones stupid enough to put hubless rotors on trucks.

the reason they put hub style rotors on a truck is because you frequently have to re-pack bearings on a truck. *off roading, or driving in any sort of rough terrain is the main cause of this*

im talking revving to 1500 rpm and launching. By holding the gas and the brakes I dont know how well a "pump to set" e-brake would do for that

....a pump to set e-brake will only lock up the rear brakes, where-as holding the brakes and revving the gas will quickly fuck up your front brakes........

1. Set E-brake

2. Rev shit out of engine

3. Release ebrake after burnout as you start to pull away

4. Go buy new tires

My sister has an Eclipse (actully looks nice, it's riced out at all, just turbo mufflers and a custom body kit) and her car has hubs. My other sister's Dodge Colt and my Ford Escort both have engines made by Mitsubeshi and the braking system on both of them is the Mitsubeshi braking system and they both have hubs. So maybe it's just 4WD foreighn cars, or maybe not on Mitsubeshi but on Toyota or Honda ,cause with all the foreign FWD's I've seen they have hubs.

On the original topic: If your caliper falls off while your going down the road it is scary as f***, at least if it's the front one. (I never had the back fall off, si maybe it would be the same or maybe worse.) The front will spin around and end up wedging itselt between the inside of your rim and your control arm and at 30 mph it will bend the control arm. Your car will go from whatever speed your going to 0 in like .00005 seconds and if your lucky like I was, no one will be too close behind you since the instant stop not be using the brake lights to give any warning. I would think at highway speed it would be very easy to loose control of the car, spin out, hit a ditch, and flip or roll it, since at 30 it skidded about 15 feet in which it was pulling sideways badly and I had a hell of a time steering it to not cross the center line and hit someone head on.

yes you should be able to find hub style rotors on alot of cars, simply because it is much easier to repack/replace bearings then on a hubless, pressed in bearing. alot of foriegn cars do this also because because the ones that get shipped overseas usually have to have bearing repacked/replaced because of the axial load they get during shipping. it wears out the bearing premature and usually go bad quickly, unless you get a good car. The only good thing is dealerships accually cover bearings under the warrenty because its a common problem with imported cars.

domestic cars (FWD) rarely get this feature.

88-98 GM fullsize trucks and SUVs, both 4WD and 2WD had the rotor and hub combined on the front and drums in the rear.

99-04 GM fullsize trucks and SUVs have hubless rotors and 4-wheel disc brakes. Hubs are sealed and replaced as a unit just like their cars now.

05 goes back to drums in the rear for some reason, but front discs are still hubless.
