there's nothing easy or cheap that will really make a difference, including a filter/intake and exhaust.

gen 3 top end swap and headers. I have no idea wtf "noticable" is to you people but I could tell when I tuned a stock 3.1 chip for better performance. I guess if its not 14s, its not noticable from running high 17s

Nothing to make anything noticable...............

gotta spend the cash.....

Engine Swap to 3.1 Turbo or L67 3.8 S/C

God forbid it isn't boosted and you can't just modify when the wastegate opens/closes or mess with the supercharger bypass valve. Nope. If it hasn't got a *charger bolted to it, IT SUCKS!

Sell it and buy a cadilac with a northstar....lol

Seriously, not a lot is out there for the 3.1. Make the exhaust and air flow better by adding bigger exhaust, high flow cat, and an aftermarket air cleaner setup or you can use a k & N filter in the stock box and knock the bottom of the box out for more airflow as i did on the lumina.

Like they said above, you can get a chip for it if your willing to spend the cash. you could also port and polish the heads and intake for better flow.

If you want a sinmple solution, truthfully, there isn't one. Nitrous will work in moderation, but it only works till the bottle runs dry and isn't worth the effort of modding the fuel system for more flow.

oh come on now....the 3.4 is advanced in the sense that is has no "boost" but yet still has more ponies than the 3.1T of similar years. but yeah...not too start an engine war here, but i wanted to point out that the 3.4 was left out of the possible selections in Davis' previous post.

yeah, why was it left out, it's an easier bolt in then the L67, that's for sure - and why does EVERYONE recomend the L67 before exploring what all's avaliable for the 3.1 (non-turbo)

The K&N / Air-Box mod is by far the easiest one available.

As for the 3.1 I know there's headers available for it (not cheap) you can port the intake, and heads, or even go a step further and make your own intake, you can turbocharge it (with only a little intercooled boost) without much for mods, Nitrous is always a good thing too, but use it in moderation - and it's only fun till it runs out (like someone else said)

so LOTS of little things can be done, but speed costs money, so all ya gotta ask yourself is "how fast do ya wanna go"

that was so funny that i forgot to laugh man...your good!

Well I have an aftermarket intake and I was gonna do stock size custom exhaust with no cat and flowmaster 40s and then I was thinkin port and polish but its a little expensive and it'll prolly take a while, also I might think of a cam and rockers

as a quick summary, if you want to go fast for cheap, you're driving the wrong car.

Thats why my car is staying pretty much stock. I'm not wasting money on exhaust and intake modifications to gratify my ass-dyno. Next year if I have extra money I'll buy something RWD/V8/hopefully standard transmission. A summer car for modding and taking to the track.

Well I'm just at a point where I don't have expertise, money, time, or space to do an engine swap I just wanna have a car to beat ricers. And I bet I can already do that with just the intake. Also I think I passed 200 hp with the intake cuz I have 185 stock and the intake adds about 18

can i hit some of that weed you're smoking? it seems like good shit, because 3.1's made 140 horses.

185 = torque, and you're intake sure as hell didn't add 18. maybe like 2.

More like -18 ft/lbs of torque.

Are you saying an intake lost torque?

What sort of intake is this? Cold Air? Short Ram?

aperintly home made short rams on the 3.1 lose torque because the location of it is just sucking in hot air

The hot air doesn't help, but the real reason short ram intakes with cone filters loose torque is because of lack of restriction. The stock 3.1 intake system does a good job of speeding up airflow at low engine speeds.....hence the reason they make good torque at low RPM.

A few days ago I posted two dyno charts from a 3100; one with the stock intake, one with a short ram/cone. Compared the the stock setup, the short ram gained 2 HP, but lost 20 lb-ft torque.
