gpse_97
hello everyone! I'm new here, just got my '92 STE 3 weeks ago. I have a few questions, -How do I disable the EGR, just remove the connector correct? -my Check ABS light is on in the DIC, how do I test which Hub is gone? -what is the average fuel millage on this thing? I get around 400km a tank (249 miles) thanks, BTW is a 1992 Grand Prix STE with the LQ1 (3.4 DOHC)
Canada
Why do you want to disable the EGR? Disconnecting it will set a code......and the EGR may not stay closed. You need to see what trouble codes are in the PCM. I get about the same milage........300 with nothing but interstate driving.
slick
If you want to eliminate it, your gonna have to go with a chip. Don't ask on my mileage, its horrible.
gpse_97
thanks for the replies guys. I have it disconected but it hasn't set a code yet. I Want to disable it to keep the intake plenum clean and free of carbon build up.
GutlessSupreme
I would think it'd be more worth it just to run a bottle of cleaner every oil change or so..
White93z34
usually i can pull off around 300-350 miles to a tank in my car. best i ever got was 385miles to a tank, and that was almost pure highway driving.

I replaced the following since I got the car: -New AC\Delco Stock Plugs gapped at 0.45 -New AC\Delco Fuel Filter -New AC\Delco Plug Wires -New AC\Delco 02 Sensor -New PCV Valve -Coolant Flush -180 Thermostat -Oil Change -Brake Flush -GM Cleens I Still only get 370-400km/ tank. and thats with normal driving, not even killing it. Does the MAP sensor effect fuel consumption? thanks.
skiiirt
Stay under 3000 rpm. Use mid range gasoline from Shell. I dont know how else. My engine was a brand new rebuild so it's mechanically sound. I change my oil every 3000km too EGR valve greatly affects the mileage. I was told "DO NOT remove your EGR valve" It may be an emissions thing but it also is a fuel economy device. Removing such will lower it further When my EGR valve is acting up I notice a trip to the grocery store can eat a quarter tank. Just a suggestion

As has been discussed here and elsewhere ad nauseum, there is little to nothing to be gained by running the engine any cooler than spec, and plenty of downside, such as increased engine wear. With all city driving, a heavier foot, and the 3.4 DOHC engine, 370-400km/tank isn't all that abnormal. There's plenty of other things that could be going on, for example, perhaps your torque converter lockup solenoid isn't working correctly. Or you are using an innappropriate weight of oil. The cooler thermostat though, can be making a significant difference. I had a failing thermostat in a 3800 -based car, and it burned a ridiculous amount of petrol before I finally had the thermostat replaced. Good luck, try some longer highway driving and see how it goes. I can get about 1000km on the highway out of a single fill of petrol these days in my 3.1L, so thats proof that better mileage definitely is possible with the correct maintenance and driving style.
