Should I upgrade to a 284?

A '91 Z34 just came into a local j/y which is rare enough around here but the things a 5-speed! :D It's got 255000Kms and the t-belt is gone  Considering the condition of the car I'm going to assume the trans is good, and I can get it for like $150.

I think my 282 needs to be rebuilt cause there's problems with the shift forks so I'm gonna be spending money where would it be spent best.

I am planning a built turbo 3x00 so would the 284 be a better option or will the 282 hold up fine, I've heard the 284 is like the worst trans when it comes to repairs, so I'd like to take that into consideration.

Plus what differences are there between the 282/284 setup, what parts are needed to convert?

If I have any chance of getting this I have to get it tommorow or possibly the day after if I'm lucky. So I need to decide ASAP.

Thanks in advance.

True that 284s are rare in some cases, I've heard that it's really expensive to rebuild them. But I would still get it if I were you, it holds more torque than the 282. Not saying that you can't beef up the 282, but it's entirely up to you and what you want to do.

284's clutch is released in the other direction (I forget which is which)........they are a beefier trans.........I think they weigh another 30 lbs or so.

If anything, buy it, clean it, eBay it. A friend of mine (Dave Holst) sold one on eBay for $1k.

buy the 284. It has different gearing that is best for the 3.4. However, you should just keep the 282 that you have and beef it up. The gearing will be best for the pushrod engine and you can get it built up rather nicely without going to getrag for it. As for the 284, you can neither rebuild nor build up.

Yeah the 284 -- I've heard good and bad things. The good things being better quality gears, bearings etc. The bad things being about the clutch release and the fact that it puts too much stress on the crank. Either way, they cost a fortune to rebuild and are next to impossible to find. Like Canada says, I sold one on eBay for $1000 but it was from a GM donated shop car (92 Grand Prix) with 15,000 original miles on it. Now -THAT- was a nice trans. It had a label on it that said "do not service trans - call 1-800-xxx-xxxx" which was probably to Getrag or whatever but the number was no longer in service. I paid only $75 bucks for that transmission, I think. Best junkyard find ever!

But yeah, I'd stick with a 282...

stay with the 282. the 284 is longer being rebuilt and GM is no longer selling them because they are more then 10 years old. look in the future for some upgraded parts for the 282. if things go well i will be getting alot of parts made

284 :worship:

I laughed how every reply had "284" in like the first 3 words of the sentence so I had to start mine that way too.

:willynilly:

Hell yeah get it even if you aren't gonna use it. I'm sure alot of guys will want it from here including me....eventually.
