fierofanatic
Alright here's the deal. Local transmission shop is looking at between $850-$1500+ (Basiclly, not giving me any hard numbers till the transmission is lying apart in their shop) to rebuild the 4T60-E in my 93 Grand Prix. Me and my dad walked out telling them we'll be in contact within the next couple of days. First off, its just plain stupid spending $1500 on a car thats worth $3,000 tops . Now here I go.... I have some experience with pulling apart 5 fiero's in the past, and getting 2 of them running again 8) , so I have some mechanical abilities. I'm looking at 2 transmissions available for a reasonable price at 2 junkyards in Michigan. One transmission is from a 93 Lumina, and is said to have 37,000 original miles on it, $350, no core, 30 day (worthless) warranty . 2nd yard, 54k mile transmission out of a 93 cutlass, 100 day warranty if filter, and seals are replaced . Next question: What do I need to look for, when getting a transmission out of a yard? I can't afford over a grand, nor can my dad for a "rebuilt" tranny. The guy at the tranny shop (Quality Clutch and Gear; Midland, Michigan) said "Sitting around the valves can get stuck, yada, yada, yada." Which I guess can be understandable, but he's still trying to sell me on his $1500 option. Next question: What tools are going to be needed? I have a full craftsman socket wrench set, metric, sae. A full wrench set, hammers, etc. I have a wooden A-Frame lift, that can easily lift up the rear end of a fiero, with motor and all, so lifting the grand prix shouldn't be too hard. Any special tools? :? Next question: Is it feasible to pull the case apart on a trans at a yard to make sure nothings broken, without gears flying everywheres? Is it easy? I just don't wanna make a $350 mistake.... Or can I just pull off the oil pan, and see almost everything? Put the trans in gear by hand and rotate it? :? Next Question: What do I need to do, to pull the old transmission out, a step by step write up would be nice, if there's one on the web somewheres (Searched but couldn't find one). What socket wrench is needed for the axles, 30 mm deep well? Also, no transmission shop in my area will put in a used transmission, it's either their rebuilt tranny, or hit the road. Thanks everybody, a Mod should sticky this thread so everyone would know how to do this......
maybe2fast
37,000!!!!!! slap that bitch it there and be done with it...then drive it up toa shop that does "trans fluid exchanges" all the fluid and be done with it 500.00 tops
mihela816
basic hand tools and a lift should be enough. You don't need to pull the axles, just get them out of the way.
DaveFromColorado
tell them you want a SOLID quote in your hands before you approve ANY work on the transmission, if it's the $850 ammount that's good, any by law they can not go more then 20% over that, if they do, they are liable for that expense themselves. --Dave. Canada
tell them you want a SOLID quote in your hands before you approve ANY work on the transmission, if it's the $850 ammount that's good, any by law they can not go more then 20% over that, if they do, they are liable for that expense themselves. --Dave. Then they'll just high ball the rebuild (or rebuild it with broken pieces)........there is NO way of know what exactly has failed......you can get a general idea from a test drive and pan drop......but thats it. Thats why they say, we need to remove the trans and tear it down......not, yes its broke, and its going to cost this exact amount. If you decide to go with the used transmission, pull the oil pan and cut open the filter. If you see any chunky bits, somethings failed.....you should see some black build up from the clutches....very typical.
jeremy
I would get the $350 tranny with 37K on her.....why is a 30 day warranty worthless?????....you should be able to get it in pretty damn quickly, then you have almost 3.5 weeks to see if there are any issues... manitcor
you could also concievelable repair the exsiting transmission. The cost in a transmission is not the labor. A full rebuild takes about 5-8 hours of actual time. The money is in the parts, things like input/output shafts, differentiatials, valve bodies, solenoids, plantary gears and such are not cheap. If you want grab an ATSG book for the 4t60e and review the troubleshooting and rebuild procedures. It might be as simple as a single clutch set slipping out or a bad valve seal. What is the tranny doing anyway? Im working on building a 4t65 to replace my t60. At first the ATSG book seemed overwhelming but its all starting to make more and more sence. You can pick up an ATSG book on ebay for about $20-$30.
