briandors
I bought a 95 Cutlass Supreme convertible 3.1 L with 118k, now it has 135k on it. Runs strongs, idles smoothe, gas mileage good. But I get a bit of smoke from the tailpipe when I first start it. If I start it hot I don't get any. Is this simply internal engine wear? I think the person that owned it two-owners-ago was really rough on the car and it wouldn't surprised me if he didn't do any maintenance. I'll drive it till it dies if it's something internal, but anything else to check for? Should I stop using synthetic oil? (not sure why i would, i still want it to last as long as possible). Thanks, Brian
White93z34
sounds like internal wear to me, lots of older cars do this at startup. as for synthetic, has it used synthetic all its life? if not you may want to change to a synth blend instead but i could be wrong. jimmy91444
valves seals are starting to leak oil. Nothing to worry about until you change your head gasket.
briandors
Can you clarify? Are you trying to say that when i go in there to change the head gasket i could replace the valve seals, or, are you saying that once i change the head gasket the valve seals are going to go really bad? I think you mean the first situation. I wonder how much a head gasket job plus valve seals on this engine would take, somehow I think I'll just sell it before it gets too bad. I love working on cars, but, not really into taking the engine apart. I don't even like taking the plenum off when I don't have to. WhiteOut
It could actually be a couple things. 1) If the smoke is blue then its most likely worn valve seals allowing oil to leak into the combustion chamber while the car sits. 2) Your fuel injectors could be leaking excess fuel into the combustion chamber while the car sits. This would be accompanied by rough starts and a puff of white/grey smoke.

mfewtrail
What color is the smoke from the tailpipes?
