Anything I can do to troubleshoot? It seems to defrost and defog alright but I dont get any heat. Living in Canada thats not something I want to leave broken. DiscoStudd
What exactly do you mean by "heat doesn't work?" Does it not switch over to "HTR" mode (air blows to the floor)? Or does it not put out any hot air when you move the selector over to "HOT?" I'd probably suspect the control unit in both cases. Pull the unit out, crack open the case and look for the main "IC" chip. Take a hot soldering iron and hold the tip to each terminal of the IC for 5-6 seconds each. What usually happens is the small wires inside the IC that connect the chip to the terminals break loose, and if you reheat the terminals, it will mend the connection inside... skiiirt
Ok I turn the car on and put the heat on (climate control) set it to a toasty 32 (celsius) and about 35 minutes later it is still blowing cold air. The fans are turning and the radiator fluids are good. It seems to defrost (maybe thats just cuz its blowing air on the window) but doesnt defog the windows other than windshield I am thinking about the thermostat biut I really dont know anything about cars other that what I learn from the forums and the advice i get from mechanics
DiscoStudd
A thermostat that's stuck closed would cause you to have no heat like that. It's a good place to start, anyways. Someone with a 3.4 wanna chime in here on how to exactly replace his thermostat? You can always look where the upper radiatior hose connects to the block cause that's where 99.999% of engines house their thermostat. There's usually 2 or 3 bolts holding the housing in place. Remove the upper radiator hose, take out the housing bolts, remove the housing, then remove and replace the thermostat (and gasket.) Simple as that. If that doesn't solve the problem, then try fixing the climate control unit like I described before...
94CutlassSLCoupe
If your thermostat was stuck closed, the upper radiator hose would not get hot. Did this just happen suddenly, or have you not used your heat in a good long time? Unless it happened suddenly, I would definately not rule out a plugged heater core either. GOT2B GM
Open up coolant bleeders, by thermostat and master cylinder. Open rad drain (bottom of rad - drivers side) Drain your coolant into a clean container if reusing. Remove your airbox. Remove the upper rad hose. Undo the 2 bolts holding the therostat housing onto the intake manifold. Its just a bit tricky to manouver the housing out of the way with the metal coolant tube running below it. But it does come out. Change out your thermostat and gasket. I used an 180*. It doesn't hurt to use a bit of RTV sealant when reassembling. Install airbox. Close rad drain. Refill coolant system. Close coolant bleeders. Add coolant as necessary to overflow tank. Hope this helps a bit.
skiiirt
Did this just happen suddenly, or have you not used your heat in a good long time? I unplugged the terminals to the battery and coincidentally? the heat stopped. Thanks for the info guys, I think I'll start with the easiest solution and change out the thermostat. gunna try a j/y thermostat first. If that doesnt work I'll try somethin else

skiiirt
I got a friend at the j/y so he'll just grab me one anyways. I will prolly end up buying a new one anyways cuz the j/y one will prolly go. I'd rather test it with something free just to see if it is that. Also I am getting a new (j/y new) egr. Anyone know the likely hood of a brand new AC Delco EGR failing
