lock up converter or solenoid going bad?

i did have a post like this but i never worked on the problem tell tonight

On my 95 GP with the 3100 in it when i go down the road it come in and out of overdrive.

someone on here told me to unplug the 4 plug thing on top of the transmission so i did that and went for a drive, it did not go into overdrive or try to. would this indicate that it is the lock up converter or solenoid is bad or does it not tell me anything?

I'm really tired of it coming out of OD or just putting it in 3rd and having it run at 2800 RPM all the time so i would like to get it fixed if i can.

if it's slipping in and out of OD it sounds more like a shift solonoid problem.

even with the converter lockup solonoid unpluged it should still go into overdrive and stay in it.

are you sure it's not going into OD and the converter is just slipping like mad?

how can i find out what it is easy?

I am in a auto tech class so i can get my hands on computers, lifts, special tools and one of my instructors is a certified master mechanic but there is so many in my class i don't get to work on my car that much and we are only in the shop ones a week.

you're only in the shop once a week?!? wow! when I was in class, we were in the shop every day, all day - two hours of lecture the rest of the time was all hands on.

anyhow, you should be able to monitor the trans with any scan tool - that'd be the best thing, so you can watch the solenoid function. if you use a snap on scan tool, you can set up each solenoid to it's own LED on the front to make it easier to watch.

just make sure that all the sensors and such are pluged in.

I'm in high school still and this is only a 90 minute class because we have to travel to and from there. it will go up to 2 times a week soon and then 3 or more later. but right now it is a lot of getting to know every thing with a car and that in the class room. Some people in the class don't know shit and others have rebuilt engine and trannys.

Edit, and i think it maybe a snap on one there, most of the stuff is snap on

sounds like your cellinoid (sp?) is bad. Get it replaced and it should fix your problem. Since it is inly like a $50 dollar part, replace it before spending money on bigger repairs.

spending money on bigger repairs? what is that we only have more money in repairs then the car due to the idiots that had the car before me, what is another 1500-2k for a new tranny.

I have shop Wednesday i think so i might be able to find out if it is or not then with any luck.

make sure you do not have a slight missfire first. I had exactly the same problem on my '95, felt like tranny, would not shift, would not set codes either, turned out to be corroded terminals on 2 coil towers, installed 2 coils 2 wires and 2 plugs, and never had a problem after. Sounds strange, but the pcm would not let the tranny shift because of the missfire.
