94CutlassSLCoupe Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 The belt tensioner is junk on my 3100 (with 15,200 miles on it)...just flapping in the breeze at idle making my car run a little bit warmer than it should. How hard is it to replace? Its like a $40 part which isn't that bad and I can see it. Any brands I should stay away from? I'm currently looking at a Dayco. Thanks! Quote
Robby1870 Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 Its supposed to move a little at idle to help keep the belt tight as the engine varies rpms. You may just need a new belt if its moving a lot Quote
sl3196 Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 Just don't loosen the bolt on the tensioner with the belt on! I did this in my smarter years. Yah I broke it. As for replacing it just remove the belt and then the tensioner. Then when putting it back on I think there is a little part you have to match up. Pretty easy to do. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted September 11, 2004 Author Report Posted September 11, 2004 looks like the belt is at the replace line although the tensioner does move a bit side to side (not in the direction it would with the belt installed). Looks like it may have enough tension though. Quote
