Justin
Well now that the Cutty is looking sweet I need a sound to match it. I've decided on most of the system so far, but I thought I'd run it by you guys first. I plan to remove the straight pipe where my cat once resided, and stick the muffler there. I can't stand cars where you can see the mufflers hanging below the rear bumper, way too ricey for me. Now that the muffler is out of the way I plan to run a Y-pipe, stock diameter, with 04 GTP tips, which I already have, out the back. A couple questions, will the muffler's location make a difference, like will the muffler in the middle of the car sound different than if it were at the rear of the car? If I put it in the middle I'll save some $$, since I'll only need one muffler. For mufflers I'm thinking just a cheap turbo muffler, I have a couple on my Ventura and I like the sound. Granted, a built 350 the 2.8 is not, but I really don't want it to sound like the Z, with dual 8" glasspacks.
White93z34
stock z34 muffler? i LOVE that sound
Justin
I'll probably go with a new muffler, not a take off from a 10+ year old car.
White93z34
well, an OE replacement muffler then, thats what i ment anyhow
Justin
See, I don't really want an OE sound. I want something a little different, something that people will hear and say "Here comes that Cutlass again, he thinks he's so fast, but he's not." THe_DeTAiL3R
Stick with the original size piping (get mandel bent if you want BETTER). Don't get a muffler that is bigger than stock.. a muffler that is slightly smaller is better than one that is bigger..
Justin
I'm sticking with 2.25. Like I said, I'm just replacing the cat with a muffler, and y-ing the rear. I guess I care more about appearance with the Cutlass, if I want performance I'll put a mandrel bent on the Ventura.
J
yes that will change the tone of the exhaust, muffler placement makes a big difference.
mfewtrail
I'm sticking with 2.25. Like I said, I'm just replacing the cat with a muffler, and y-ing the rear. A dynomax super turbo or ultraflow(I believe the super turbos are the cheap ones that don't flow that well) might sound nice with a setup like that. With whatever you choose, you might want to also get a resonator/glasspack after the muffler to keep it from being so loud or having any raspiness. Justin
Yeah, I was thinking of a 2.25 super turbo where the cat sits, then twin resonators right into the GTP tips. I've never monkeyed with resonators before though, do they come in different lengths or anything?
mfewtrail
Yeah, I was thinking of a 2.25 super turbo where the cat sits, then twin resonators right into the GTP tips. I've never monkeyed with resonators before though, do they come in different lengths or anything? They come in various lengths Justin. I believe the general rule of thumb is that the longer they are, the quieter they make the exhaust. I guess the longer ones cancel more sound frequencies being that they have more area to bounce the sound waves off one another. Here's one site that sells stainless resonators online, I'm sure you can find more if you search a little and possibly better prices. http://www.seffects.com/parts/VIB790.htm
Justin
Hmm, makes me want to take a flashlight after my Z and see if my exhaust is actually glasspacks or just resonators....
Lee
My vote is for Flowtech's "purple hornies" glasspacks. They WILL remove the raspiness. With just one Dynomax super turbo you may need the quieting of them(it). Don't worry too much about it though....they louden up in about 9 months. But if it's raspy it won't be cool. They'll be saying, "here comes that shitty sounding car again." I put dual dynomax ST's on mine with no cat and it sounded for sh*t until I added a pack. Mine is where the cat was. Flowtech was the best constructed/do the job one I could find. You'll want to paint it silver though....yeah it is a pinky-purple color. It has the scallop cuts inside rather than a zillion little holes. Weighs threee times as much as a thrusher. They go $32 each. A stainless resonator would be better for rasp but you were going economical. Plus that Super Turbo is going to get (good and) loud in a year. Have you considered using a muffler that has a one in / dual out? Or are you running the single pipe to the rear and then Y--ing out? Justin
I have had turbo mufflers on my Ventura for about 7-8 years now, and it still sounds the same. As for the 2 into 1 muffler, I'd like to just leave as much factory exhaust as possible. That's why I want to put the muffler in the cat's position, and y another pipe off for dual exhaust. 93CutlassSupreme
you could split the exhaust after the monoleaf. that's what i did used as much of the stock piping as i could
midnight rider
how about a camaro style single inlet, dual outlet muffler?
TeeJay3800
how about a camaro style single inlet, dual outlet muffler? A Camaro style muffler (like a Flowmaster 80-series) would not work because of the lack of clearance caused by the spare tire well. It might be possible, but clearance would definitely be an issue.
