Ok, I don't have a Lumina...It's my friend's Lumina. It's a 97. Here's the problem: Normaly, the car has decent power... The only benchmark we really have is wether or not it will spin the tires from a stop. Usually it will. But every once in a while, the car seems to lose a lot of power for like the rest of the day. It happened today. He was driving around in dirt with his e-brake on flooring it for like 5 minutes. Then after that we noticed that his car was really slow. We figured it was the air filter full of dirt, so we just stuck a cone filter that one of our friends had laying around on right before the MAF sensor. Well the filter wasnt really even dirty before and the car still runs like crap... well it runs ok, but if you floor it in park it hesatates for a second before doing anything. And it wont peel out from a stop. This sucks, any ideas? His coolant is really bad also...like, really bad. He's too lazy to change it i guess. Anyway please help if you can. I don't know anything about the 3.1L. Thanks,

Mike

Do a complete tuneup (clean the throttlebody too).

And stop driving it as if it were some POS!!!! :x

Get a fucking truck if you want to have fun in dirt.

First off, luminas aren't made to take that abuse.

did the car get hot or anything? does it run like it should now that it has had time to cool off?

I would strongly recomend he flush his coolant system. 3.1 are prong to nasty problems when they don't cool properly.

Yeah, but seriously what could be wrong that a tune up would fix really? I mean this seems like an intermittant problem. Not always associated with dirt. Besides, I have a truck, this is my friends Lumina.

I dont mean to sound like an asshole. I think the only thing wrong must be that its over heating maybe? But honestly, if I were driving in dirt in my s-10 would the dirt somehow not harm it?

Hey, it is my Lumina. It did get kind of hot, a little hotter than usual. How hot is too hot? The cooling has dirt and stuff in it, but it isn't getting that hot anyway. I'll do the cooling thing tomorrow maybe, I'm going to change my sparkplugs too. I haven't changed them since I got the car (from my parents) and I don't know when they were changed last. I already changed the oil like a week or 2 ago.

Also, the dirt was flat and everything. It wasn't hills and bushs and shit. Don't you guys ever do fun stuff in your cars? I can't get a truck just to do stuff in the desert.

If its getting hot flush it good (maybe buy a can of rad flush) and get a new thermostat if you are unsure.

I like to do fun things with my car, but abusing it in ways its not meant to be abused is not one of them.

Cruising and some "other" stuff is what I like to do... 8)

I didn't do anything too extreme, I wasn't even going that fast. Just basically driving around in the dirt. It was getting hotter than that just driving it earlier. I live in Phoneix AZ and it gets pretty hot during the day time.

I'll find some place to get it checked out, maybe some place with a free inspection. I also need to find some place to check out the air conditioner, it isn't working either. I tried a recharge thing, but it didn't work so I dunno.

yeah a definite tune up. maybe this is the lumi's way of saying stop beating the living hell out of me!!!!

I never beat on my car, except when beating a ricer is at stake

if your gonna beat the hell out of one car, get one for like 200 bucks and have at it.

Well, i'm happy to announce that the Lumina seems to be running fine after flushing out all of the old brown coolant. It doesn't overheat any more... Does that sound about right? Thanks for the help everybody.

I have the 15" steel wheels and Kirkland Sigs tires (yes, Costco brand) so I don't care about them. I'm also planning a 3800 SC swap some time after I get the money.
