Broken Axles

Yeah what's the point on coming onto a W-body enthusiast message board and badmouthing the damn cars. FWD sucks, No aftermarket... bla bla bla. Get some gas-hog 4bbl V8 if you don't like it, otherwise just be quiet..

Hey..

I saw the post about tempering - when you cool them quickly, that's what adds the temper to the steal, the same thing is done with glass, it's taken from a tempature just below the point it will start to get deflections/warpages/imperfections and then put thru a blast freezer, it makes it stronger, and when it breaks, the whole thing will shatter - steal does the same thing, trying to do this same procedure with a hollow axel will created hotspots (of air) in the center of the axle which will not allow proper tempering and will cause warping, which can destroy your transmission, and wheel bearing.

  • 7 months later...

just somthin I noticed, you went up to a 17" with 255 grip on it, that makes it a hell of a lot harder for your drivetrain to get that 3000+lb baby movin, picture it like this

you at the bottom of a hill, on a 10 speed in the 'big' gear, with a 100lb pack on your back. instead of fallin off the bike, your engine dosent quit so startin with the weakest links things start gettin chewed up and spit out.

Well becuz it got kicked up...

Everyone who posted ont he first page doesn't know ANYTHING about 3.4 5-speeds. 3000 clutch drop i shard on them? That's fucking ludicrous. A 3.4 at 3000rpm isn't making very much power. On the street, I drop my clutch EVERYDAY at 4500rpm, and at the track, 6000rpm. It isn't hard on them. The tires spin, it then "catches up," then they hook up and it just takes off. There are 2 reasons why I havn't broken an axle, I'll state them below.

I know why he is. For one, he has decent power. His mods in a 5-speed are good for 14.7s. Next, and the biggest part, he has grip. From 3000rpm, I doubt his tires spin at all. They hook up and go. Now the car isn't making much power, but its enough to break axles when the power it is making HAS to go somewhere. And trust me, the power isn't going all towards accelerration with a 3400lb car. You would probably be better off, both for racing and dependability, if you dropped the clutch from 5000rpm, so long as the tires spin. If they don't, drop it from 6, then 7000. Anything to get them to spin. If they still won't, and they probly won't, put smaller tires on. Tire spin is good on a 3.4, this is how you get good 60's, and it saves the driveline.

Mine havn't broken because 1, the altitude  The car is only pulling a stock 1/4mi up here (15.22). So essentially, with all of my mods, my actual abuse was the same as it was stock at sea level. And the 2nd reason is that I have stock tires, and they spin. Spinning the wheels is good for drivelines, not good, but it doesn't hurt them as much as hooking up.

well its ben a while since i have posted because i bought a z28 but i still have the lumina and was looking on here and seen this post. I went a long time on the axle that i had until a few weeks ago when i broke yet another axle this time with my stock tires? So i think i am going to dig deeper and check the whole front end out because there is no reason that should happen especially with those tires. I dont know if i am going to worry too much about it because i got another motor in my garage that i am going to build for it and i have a spare m90 laying around from the GTP that i had for about four months until i bought this camaro and sold it to my dad. So i might see what i can make it work together.
