Canada
A friend of mine has a Neon R/T that recently recieved a set of poly shifter bushing........the just replace the stock shifter bushings on the ends of both cables to take up some of the slack for a better feel. Its a cheap and easy mod to do. I just have to get some pictures and measurements to him. I'm also trying to gather up a list of people that would be interested in this.......for any transmission......he is looking for different cars all the time apparently. Here is his site (yes, he is a Mopar guy)..... http://www.boogerracing.com/

Guest TurboSedan
i've heard GREAT things about the booger bushings on turbododge.com fwdperformance.com has them for some 5-speeds, including the A568 which i ran in my GTS up until last May (the A568 shares the same shifter as the Neon). i was going to get a set of the booger bushings ($25/set), but i'm using an A555 transmission now, and i guess they don't make them for that transmission. good luck finding them for a 282/284, altho i gotta say my Cutlass shifts AWESOME as is
Canada
I emailed him and he replied saying he would make them if he can get some mesurments from me. I am going to send htose off shortly......I was just curious if anyone else is interested.
Guest TurboSedan
if they are going to be around $25/set than i am interested....let us know.
99RegalGS
Yeah, I'm interested also. One of mine are toast.
Justin
Do they go on both ends of both bushings? I might be interested, as I still haven't stuck my new set of shifter cables on my Cutlass, and new bushings would probably be easiest to install as I'm installing the cables. Keep in mind also that there are two different kinds of ends on the shifter side of things.

Canada
Set the guy some pics and measurements......he is sending me a starter set.....should get them by Wednesday. He seems very itnerested and this is proving to be quite promising. For you 282 guys, someone send him pictures of your cable ends........they mught be the same......might not be. He'll be able to tell. His email address is.... nitroyellowgreenneon@hotmail.com His name is Jeff Ball.
JeffB#2
Folks - as soon as I get some feedback from Chris, we'll figure out what needs to be done if anything, to make them work for you. I'm surprised that GM does the same thing as Chrysler and forces a person to buy a complete cable to get one piddly little bushing. Chrysler's been doing this for years. What a waste of money for one part. Without having had a chance to dig into "commercial" rules here I'll be brief and say that I always sell single bushings to the Mopar crowd for $5 each. If these work out like it appears they will for you people, the cost is the same, $5 per piece plus shipping. I see no reason to charge more for other vehicles that they happen to fit even if you only need two pieces. I'm not into that "rip off" kind of operation. If this kind of things is against the rules here, any moderator should feel free to delete what is out of bounds without fear of offending me in any way. For the record I also still have a '68 Chevelle that I bought in '84. I'm not JUST Mopar. LOL!
Canada
I got the bushings today.......and installed.......very nice difference. I'll try and get some pics up tomorrow.....as well as write up the simplest way to install them.
dykz34
So they fit flawlessly then?
Canada
Yeah.......beings that they are poly and flex very litte (just me thats a good thing) it takes a bit of force to push them in and get it past the "head" of the stub......a little WD-40 or silicone paste and a pair of pliers works well. 99RegalGS
Good to hear that they preform good. How many bushings do the 284's have?
Justin
The 3.4's have 48 bushings, just to make them harder to work on. Just kidding, one bushing on each end of each cable, for a total of 4. This guy is just doing one end of thecables, right, or is he doing all 4 bushings?
Guest TurboSedan
just a FYI i'd throw in.... the 282 only uses 2 bushings, 1 on each cable and on the shifter side only. the transmission side of the cables doesn't use bushings - the 282 cables simply use a stud & nut on the transmission side. also, there are two different types of cable ends for the 282 selector cable depending on year, which means 2 different bushings (however all 282 crossover cables are the same). Canada
The 284 only uses 2 bushings...........one on both ends of the 1-2, 3-4, 5-R cable (longitudinal). The transverse cable doesn't use a bushing (much like the trans side of the 282).......I view the longitdunal cable as carring more importance. I think the guy only wants $5/bushing.........so why not?
Guest TurboSedan
I view the longitdunal cable as carring more importance. definately. I think the guy only wants $5/bushing.........so why not? if my clutch wasn't toasted i'd be picking up a set ASAP! does JeffB#2 need a set of used 282 bushings in order to make 'em? i could probably try removing mine since i can't drive the car anyway. i have BOTH types of crossover cable end bushings too.... Canada
Just email him a few pics of the cable ends and explain to him what you want.....he'll pry see this topic anyways..........he should be able match something up from that......at least thats what I did. I don't see a need to have used ones based on what I've seen so far. Anyone that has close-up pics of the different cable ends on the different trannies, please email them to me or post them here. If you happen to have a caliper handy and can measure the openings in the cable ends that would be great too. We're really just shooting for a replacement for the "rubber" stock ones that so obviously fall apart and disappear over time. I'm more interested in saving someone ~$100-$150 over the cost of new cable(s) by selling JUST the bushings since the cables are normally in great shape. It appears that whoever manufactures the Chrysler cables (Neon, PT, Shadow, Acclaim, Spirit, etc) also makes the GM cable, or at least the same initial design team/idea was behind them both. We know that the Getrag end of the cables carry the same "pin" design and dimensions. All the current New Venture Gear trannies are the same way. The exception to the NVG units are those destined for the cars with a Mitsu drivetrain, they have a retaining clip that passes thru the trans ends pins and a totally different bushing. Napa replacement cables suck too. i bought cables from NAPA for my A568 and trashed those bushings real quick. the bushings were like hard cheap plastic :? i'll try to get some close-up pics of the 282 cables soon... 99RegalGS
Ordered some bushings today. Can't wait to get them.
99RegalGS
I got the bushings today and Installed them. MUCH better. when I went to do the trans side bushing there was no bushing at all! I guess the owner before Aweb found out that the bushings arn;t sold seperatly and he just put a washer and a c-clip to hold the cable on the trans. A word of advise for anyone who does this. Take off the shift lever, don't just try to push it on. It makes easier to get pliers on it. Also, JeffB#2 is excellent to work with. Two thumbs up.
