GutlessSupreme Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 I've got zip ties supporting half of an exhaust hanger so it would quit fucking rattling 8) been holding fine for at least 4 months now. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted August 24, 2004 Author Report Posted August 24, 2004 I've got some sheet metal, muffler cement and a large clamp holding the mufflers onto the main pipe on my 88'. Also the plastic latch thing you pull to open the hood broke about 3 years ago... in its place a pair of vice grips attached to the end of a the cable. Quote
rudefyet Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 let's see... my 1990 Nissan 240SX had a clothes hanger hooked to the hood latch since it was broke... you had to wrap thwe seatbelt around the trunk realease to hold it up otherwise the trunk wouldn't un latch... the speakers were screwed in with wood screws... the exhaust was held on with heatshield tape and speaker wire for awhile... the platic cover over the igniton was off since the realease was broke (you had to dig you finger into the steering column and flip a tiny switch in order to key the key out)... one of the headlights was stuck up when i got it... the bulbs in the headlights were held in with duct-tape... i went to autozone and bought some 2 1/4 inch resonator pipes and muffler clamps to make the exhaust system...used a sawzall too... i tired taping the exshaust together with tape before i bought the clamps... the vents were painted white...but they had 3 pervious coats of paint that was peeling... i took the fuse out of my hazards to use in in my stereo... you had to jam something in the sunroof in order for it to keep from flapping in the wind...the latch was broke...i used a cheap disposible box cutter... i kicked a huge dent in the side... busted the tailight with a shovel...took out 2 of the bulbs in the tailights so they matched... and last but not least....i tried to do a bondo job on the trunk lid to fill up the holes....i used that wire mesh stuff but it wasn't sticky enough so i threw it out and used duct tape... btw the car was 3 colors when the engine locked up...the front was dark grey (original paint), one side was black primer and the other side the paint was sanded down...i was working on redoing it...but then it died so i said screw it as for my Honda Accord.... chrome hubcaps...trunk lib was glued together...my fuse holder for my stereo system broke so i just used a pair of jumper cables...other then that it wasn't too ghetto My GP like i'm gonna tell you... Half of my muffler is constructed of that cement. I managed to knock a GIGANTIC hole in it awhile ago.. I think I've spent more money on that cement than I would have if I just went out and bought a muffler :? Quote

I actually don't know what cherrybomb type muffler sounds like on a 3.1. Did your car have dual exhaust? Quote

I actually don't know what cherrybomb type muffler sounds like on a 3.1. Did your car have dual exhaust? Nah. Always been single exhaust. I'll get some Magnaflows and dual the damn thing once I have some cash. The 3.1 sounds bad without a muffler. 2.8's even worse. The glasspack/Cherry Bomb quiets it down quite a bit from no muffler and gives it a more monotone sound.. no raspy shit. Quote
GP1138 Posted August 24, 2004 Report Posted August 24, 2004 Hmm... let's see... When I first got the car, the shifter cable broke. I drove it around anyway, using a huge combination wrench and the ebrake to change gears when I needed to. This meant popping the hood, getting out, moving the airbox, and hoping I didn't burn my hand on the transmission Sucked when it stalled at a busy downtown intersection. I only drove it like that for a day, but that night, I forgot to engage the e-brake and ended up rolling over my foot trying to get the car out of the driveway. It didn't hurt. I kept forgetting to hook the airbox plug again, and ended up wondering why the SES light kept coming on, until I realized and had to stop and replug the box. I had a constant transmission flush going for the first 6 months I drove the car, due to both of the transmission axle seals leaking. I believe there were two seperate occurrences of missed shifts because the fluid got low, and I didn't have the money to buy more. I finally got sick of it, and just replaced the damn seals myself. My knuckles still hurt sometimes. Also, when I first got it, the brake pads were shot. I drove it around anyway, always accompanied by the sound of scraping rotors, until one of the rear rotors tore up and the caliper piston came out. I proceeded to remove the rotor's remains, and put a C-clamp on the brake line to keep pressure. That lasted until I tried to change the front brakes and the system wouldn't bleed properly. I was driving it at ~50MPH up I-675 in the right lane, and I didn't know the car only had 3 lugs on the passenger-front. The wheel came flying off, along with 3 lugs and the studs. A good samaritan picked up my wheel and my grandfather and his mechanic friend came along, put the donut on the two remaining studs, and we hobbled it to my grandfather's friend's (heated) garage. This was the middle of winter. When I pulled the DIC out of the junkyard car, I couldn't get the wiring harness complete, so I cut as much as I could, and ended up running the wiring whereever it was convenient. You could see where the wires went up into my dashboard, where they were stuck in the back of the plug for the instrument cluster. I don't have the DIC in there anymore. For awhile, my stock head unit was out of the car, along with the tape deck and clock, and an Altec Lansing subwoofer and computer 4.1 speaker set were in my car, powered by a $8.00 Meijer special power invertor. I used a portable CD player with it, and it's the best sound system that's ever been in that car. As of right now, my rear center spark plug has shot out twice, and the last time it shot out, after two failed attempts at trying to helicoil it, I basically gave up trying to do a decent job at retapping and just pushed the tap until it would go no more, and same with the spark plug. It's only been a week, but it hasn't come out since. I would have taken more time, but the plug shot out in my college's parking garage on the third floor. I sat there for a few minutes and thought, and then said fuck it and fired it up, and sounding like an oversized lawnmower the entire way, drove it down the garage's ramps, scanned my student ID, and parked it across the street in an industrial linen cleaner's parking lot. I was there for 3 hours, first waiting for the engine to cool down. I had managed to get the battery cable off (to remove the alternator for clearance) when it started to rain out of nowhere, and I had forgotten to put my driver's side window up. After the rain stopped, it was another two hours before I got the engine pulled forward and held there, and another hour later, a maintenance man from the cleaners came out and offered to loan me tools. Thank God he did because I had everything I needed but a small extension for my 3/8 drive socket set, which he loaned me, along with a flashlight and inspection mirror-on-a-telescopic-stick. The entire time, trains were running by every 5 minutes, and nobody else coming out of Sinclair's parking lot bothered to even ask if I needed help. Both times I had to roll my engine forward to fix this damn spark plug hole, my right side engine mount was too far low for the bolt to fit through the little hole on the dogbone, because my driver's front cradle bolt has broken. I used a lot of rope and a bolt on the frame to tie the engine forward, which worked perfectly. I've since replaced the other three cradle bolts myself, and the 4th will be replaced by a mechanic. I tried to drill out the tip of the cradle bolt that's stuck in the retainer, but it broke a drillbit extension, and two of Sears Craftsman's best alloy drill bits, the ones with the gold tips. I've since got my money back for those. I'm taking the car to a shop and paying $200 for them to weld a new retainer in there and fix my cradle. I hope they don't notice my right side engine mount isn't fastened. I tried to replace it, but I couldn't get the bolts on the bracket to come loose, even with PB blaster, and when I decided I'd had enough and lowered the engine back down, the studs on the mount were no longer aligned with the holes and the mount is now resting on the cradle. This car has 192,900 miles and I'm currently in search of a 3.1 or better to drop in. The more serious problems are taken care of. The engine doesn't contact the firewall, I keep my dogbones fresh so it doesn't move too much, and I don't drive hard (often) so as not to snap the 3 engine cradle bolts that remain. The car is going to the mechanic tomorrow, so that will soon be a non-issue. So, can anyone beat my list?? Quote
