Baddflash
Ok this morning I go out and everything appears to be fine and I got up to 5th no problems. Then after when I go to backup I can't get into reverse or 5th gear for that matter. 1st-4th are working fine but now 5th is actually 3rd again and reverse position is actually 4th again. I got it to go into reverse a couple times but the engine wasn't running, I started it after getting it in gear. Is this possibly a shift cable issue or does this tranny need to be ripped out and rebuilt? I'm not going to drive it until I figure out whats going on, the tranny would appear to be intact still so hopefully it won't cost too much. Any help is appreciated. Canada
Sounds like you have a cable problem...........to check this, look at the transmission side of the cables to see if they are moving fully.
Guest Gp crazy
make sure subframe bolts are in place also. the washer's may look fine but around the head of the bolts can pull through the washer's or break the head off the bolt. jeff b
Guest TurboSedan
Sounds like you have a cable problem...........to check this, look at the transmission side of the cables to see if they are moving fully. i would agree. my cables have actually come loose where they bolt onto the shift levers on the transmission. the shifter will start to feel really funny when that happens. Well I guess that's possible but I tried it tonight when i got home and reverse worked a couple times and then it was gone again. It does feel a bit sloppy but I think the cable ends on the transmission were tight when I checked it, it was raining all day so I never had a chance to really look at it. Hopefully I can get a good look at it tommorow cause I'd hate to pull it apart for a rebuild. Atleast I got a backup car so I'm not without wheels and I just borrowed a deh7200 HU, 800w sony amp and 2-12"s sonys so I will have tunes in the beater again . The system isn't being used and he doesn't car about it which is good cause there's no way some little bastard is stealing all my new shit. Not that I want his stolen either. edit: its a DEH-7400 and it sucks compared to my 7600.
Guest TurboSedan
check that the cable hold-down bracket is tight also. it's the part that holds both of the cables down onto the transmission itself:

Baddflash
check that the cable hold-down bracket is tight also. it's the part that holds both of the cables down onto the transmission itself: That's the first thing I looked at right when it happened, unfortunately it and the cables are in the proper place. 5speedz34
If the cables look fine I would think maybe something with the shift forks isn't working right.
Baddflash
Actually I'm really starting to think it is the side-shift cable. I don't really have the coin for a new one right now and the spare I've got is nearly seized now so it's gonna have to wait.
Baddflash
Well today I went to a local jy and there was a '90 GP LE with a 3.1/5-speed, so I pulled the shifter and cables and put them in my car. What a pain to do but after everything was swapped I can now use reverse and 5th. Thanks for the help.
