DakotaMatt
I've decided to swap in the 284. I made my mind up shortly after I found a place to get 284 parts from . I’ll take pics of the parts as I get them out of the trans, and compare them to the new parts I get. Fingers crossed Matt
White93z34
hell yeah i really don't have anything against the 3800 but it bores me, its just really a outdated iron headed pushrod engine, the 3.4 to me is just neat in its workings, when you tell people you got a 3.4 they tend to give you a blank expression. you pop the hood and i see a 3800 it just bores me and gm is useing the bejesious out of this engine seems everything has one. WillR2K
I Love the 3.4 DOHC , proud owner of 1994 Lumina Z34, 1994 Euro 3.1, and 1991 Lumina Z34 (for sale) non running as of now, was told its the coil packs but im lazy lol , but anyways I love the 3.4 top end, sometimes i wish it wasnt governed at like 120 thinking of getting a chip soon, but only after i get some mods like exhaust and i wanna turbo this thing if anyone has any formulas for my wishes do tell please, but yah the 3.4 surprises many many people at the races, everyone is like wtf is that, but yah anyways the sound of the intake screaming at full throttle is nice too, just my 2 cents but if anyone is intrested in the 1991 Z34 hit me up. mihela816
If you like dohc's, and want more power, that 3.6 VVT looks pretty cool. Eventually I want to swap one of those into my car.
DakotaMatt
To start a new topic or to not. That is the question. I drove 12 hours yesterday, and the result is I now own a 92 grand prix SE with a 3.4 DOHC and a 284 5 speed. YEAY. The other day I also bought a set of 10mile heads and cam carriers (complete with valves and cams, etc.) from a 95 3.4, and a 97 intake. I just need to find a 97 throttle body now... I'll take pics later. Matt
slick
Grrr... I wanted that style intake. Now im currently designing my own. I just need a TB.
DakotaMatt
Question: does the slight flow increase a 97 intake has over a 92 intake come from the upper intake manifold, the lower, or a combination of the 2? I noticed on my 92 intake, the TB is part of the manifold (WTF!!) and on my 97, the TB is seperate like all other non-retarded intakes. I only bought the 97 upper intake (that's all my supplier had) and not the lower. Am I going to want to get the lower? Matt
slick
Yes, you are going to need the lower intake manifold. Also, *I think* theres a few minor modifications that you will have to make too. Talk to 93regalgs, he did the swap.
DakotaMatt
Funny story: I'm driving home from work on my lunch break, and a guy in a red Z34 is waiting to get into traffic near a light. He and I pull up even at the intersection, and he looks at me in a queer way. So I hold up the Z34 instrument cluster that I had received that day (Thanks Brian!) and he yells to me "what happened?" I explain that I am working on a 3.4 284 swap. He yells back "I just wrecked one! Want some parts?" Anyway, time for an update and some questions: I've got the entire interior from my 92 GP SE in my Lumina. The dark grey seats look nice with my blue interior, and the rear armrest is cushy. I really like the bucket seats and the power driver seat I have a light grey center console from a Z, which looks kinda out of place. Were any blue center consoles made, or were all Euro and Z34 cars grey/maroon? The shifter looks really, really stupid without the 284 to back it up I almost want to make it into a cup holder temporarily! I've got a complete 96 intake set now, with the TB and TB neck. I've got a set of no-air manifolds, and yet another 284! I think I may be biting off more than I can chew, but what the heck: Does anyone want to trade a front non-air manifold for my rear one? I'm picking up a TGP radiator and intercooler on Thursday Pictures and more info later this week. I start the engine build on Friday! DakotaMatt
I must have been on crack last time I went to look at the intercooler/radiator I thought was for a TGP. Turns out, when I REALLY looked at it, it was for a something Chrysler, like a turbo Daytona. Doh! I am very intrested in buying a TGP intercooler/radiator... any sellers? Also, I tried searching for pics showing the difference between 96 and 95 exhaust ports... no luck. Any help? Matt
