Is it toast?

I have aquired a 1991 Lumina 3.1 Euro that is in fantastic condition except the transmission.

Get it up to about 35 and it slips, BAD. :(

The fluid is burnt and it was just rebuilt 3-4 years ago, so the owner said. If I do my best to flush it completely, is there a chance I can save it? Or will I have to rebuild it or replace it?

Thanks so much.

what gear is it in? At 35, the TC (torque converter) should start to lock up, maybe make you think its slipping. How are the shifts? Firm, long, soft? Do all 4 gears work?

It's in second, I believe, it is a very light shifting car, from when I drove it before - I've been taking care of it for about 3 months now, but never gave a thought to the tranny because it just started doing this - and I don't know if all 4 gears are working because it simply will not go past 35 before an "invisible hand throws it in neutral."

She drove it to work every day and just today it did this. She gave it to me because she is going to buy a new car anyway.

I had an 84 Caprice Classic station wagon (with the THM 200-4R) that was doing the same thing. I took it in to have a flush and filter change, and they found clutch residue in the bottom of the pan. I told them to fill it back up with fresh fluid, and when I left it shifted perfectly fine as long as I babied it. I drove it for 3 months like that, sold it, and the guy I sold it to drove it for 2 months before selling it again, and the next guy got 4 months out of it before the tranny finally crapped out. (I worked with both guys and I told the guy I sold the Wagon to about the tranny and he didn't tell the next guy about it :? ...)

So the moral of the story: Try getting a flush and filter change and you might get a few more months out of it. Of course I can't guarantee that, though...
