Luke
After 4 months of no problems, the engine started knocking today. I need to know what I need to swap over a different motor. I don't care about performance, as my car is a daily driver. This is the second 3.4 to knock and there are not any to be had in Western New York. Any help will be greatly appreciated. EurosportZ34
What are you planning on swapping? Another DOHC?
White93z34
if you want to make a trip down to pa there is one 91-93 3.4 in a prix in a junkyard
Luke
I'd just as soon not put in another 3.4. Looking for something more reliable. Otherwise will sell car as is.

Try swapping a 3400 SFI, there's another guy on the forum doing that right now...he'd be able to help ya with any questions.
Vegeta
what year is your car?
Luke
Brad-My car is a carbon copy of yours. I really just need a simpler swap. Maybe a 3.1? Something that would alllow me to run the same tranny and minimal wiring. Luke.
Luke
Sorry! It is a 92 Z34 with a 95 engine (same as 92 basically)/

True that...I guess the ol' 3.1 wouldn't be a bad swap, trusty mo fo's.
skiiirt
Sorry to hear 'bout the 3.4. I been there too
manitcor
DOHC = Engine swap waiting to happen  3400 swaps are super easy, go for it and get a motor that is way more reliable and much easier to work on. You do get 35 less ponies over the DOHC but you get more low end grunt.  There are a lot more mods for the 3400 too
Vegeta
way more reliable eh? News to me, cause reliability hasn't been an issue for most people, its the maintenance. I don't know what you are doing to make these engines knock but the pushrods have the same bottom end as the DOHC.
White93z34
whats this about these engines not being relyable? mines been kicking for 120k and counting with just the normal matniance, timeing belt, plugs, wires, etc.
EurosportZ34
Here's that thread about swapping a 3.4 DOHC to 3400 SFI.... Â http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19525&highlight=

Simple as that. WHat kind of knock are you talking about? Engine knock? Rod knock (wtf is rod knock anyway!). The only knock I get from my DOHC is the state trooper on my driver side window asking me for my license and registration!  Vegeta is right, the DOHC was born from a pushrod block, so what's the issue? White93z34
rod knock = connecting rod koncking on the block
FastSE2DR
rod knock isnt knocking on the block...its when you spin a bearing its vibrating against the crank journals and its causing the rod to knock...right?
White93z34
well sometimes it will knock off the block if its bad enough but usually when a end cap breaks off its the rod smacking the crank
FastSE2DR
wow i guess i hadnt heard of the rod hittin the block or breaking the end cap off with the car still running like that
94CutlassSLCoupe
the 3.4 has almost all the moving parts a 2.8/3.1/3100/3400 has except the pushrods...including an in block cam, then add the dohc hardware  More moving parts + higher rpm + more mantience nessesary (people will more likely forget to do it on time) + harder to service = its gonna be called (deservingly or not) unreliable. I know the pushrod motors are bulletproof but I seem to always see 3.4 twin dual cam motors being torn apart at the chevy dealer for major things
Luke
Spun #6 bearing=con. rod knock. When I bought the car it was knocking. Got 30 day warranty on motor, 120 days later, knock. I do my own installs and maint., but the 3.4 is so costly for parts. No one sells engine kits, just piece by piece. I paid 900 for car, spent 800 to get it going and now I need another engine. I am at the point of exceeding the price of the vehicles book value. Just not worth it to me to do another 3.4. I like the engine, but I'd just as soon not have the hassles of the 3.4. Just my opinion.
Vegeta
Only the DOHC ever has spun bearings. No other motor in the world has the problem...its only LQ1 related. Better put the iron duke in your car, im sure it will run forever.
excelsior
haha about the iron duke....my suggestion is try the l36. Definitely give that a shot...on a side note...i wanna see the lq1 w/ boost....that would be fun!
