cryptnix
I and a few others have come to the conclusion that my issue with shitty performance is due to a cat that is dead. My friend said he could faintly smell a essence of eggs from behind, and beside my car. So, I spoke to a few people, one thing that someone said is to remove the cat and replace it with a test pipe leaving the o2 sensor in the piping. Question is will this cheap fix cause me problems and grief in the future?
midnight rider
it will at least show you if this was an issue, however, put a cat back on it later.
cryptnix
thanks sir. yeah, it was wierd ... i got to holland and backed up at the meet and the thing was all hesitant. i should have looked undernieth! another thing is after cooling down she seemed potent again. so perhaps my issue is a failing cat
RedCavyRS99
take the cat and turn it into some form of modern art cause its dead
Guest TurboSedan
my cat was really starting to stink when i got off the highway...coming up an off-ramp i could really smell it. that was back when my car had about 200,000 miles on it. i had a local exhaust shop cut the cat out and weld in a test pipe for like $60. while performance did increase and the bad smell went away, my car sounds like ASS now.....raspy as hell oh well it will be turbocharged soon and that will take car of the raspiness i would try to get a good aftermarket cat if i were you, maybe a Carsound cat or something. White93z34
might want to watch out for a cloged cat, they have been known to burn cars down
cryptnix
Is 2.5" alittle large for a 3100 motor?
Justin
Just thought it was worth mentioning that you will get an SES light on without a cat. You'll have to either use an O2 simulator, install another cat in the car, or live with the light on.
sl3196
thanks guys ... how raspy was it? malibu's is pretty raspy. Mine's almost as bad after I got the u-bend/res taken out.
Guest TurboSedan
thanks guys ... how raspy was it? malibu's is pretty raspy right around 2500 RPM in Neutral it is really raspy....i don't have a sound clip but you'd probably laugh if you heard it. i would have done something about it by now if i wasn't planning on the turbo 3.1. Stevo
I just took mine off my 88'. Drilled a huge ass hole trough it 'entry to exit'. Dumped all the crud out of it and put it back on. During inspection it looks like a working Catalytic converter and no ones the wiser. However... the guy at the parts place in a 'dealership' told me that 91' and on requires a catalytic converter. So I could run without it.
jeremy
I have had mixed results with straight pipes.....in my fiero, when I straight piped where the cat and paired it with a borla exhaust it made my car sound like it was a small block.....in my Probe with a straight pipe and a borla it sounded like a bumble bee.....
