White93z34
hmm i asume you have checked your trans fluid? mabie change it if its black? or if all else fails bottle of lucas trans fix then look for another 4t60, that has to totally suck
Guest Gp crazy
Yep that sucks. I would look for a transaxle or buy another car as parts. sometimes cheaper Look in to a 5 speed if you got the time + $$$ :!:

gp90se
nope the fluid is nice cherry red  Try some lucas in it. that stuff works miracles  I have nuthin but faith in that shit, but if the tranny isnt going into gear, it isnt worth the $8, as a last attempt 2 get the car 2 move, throw in sum of the cheap tranny fix shit and leave the car in neutral with the ebrake on, might unstick a stuck valve
maybe2fast
no! first is there but it slips , 2nd 3rd and 4th seem to be fine
maybe2fast
well fellaz I am getting it rebuild for a good price (one of the techs at my work is going to do it)
gp90se
IIRC, you can put 4t65E internals into a 4t60e housing, which are supposed 2 be a LOT stronger, plus u can have a limited slip diff put in witht he 4t65E parts, i know its been talked about before
maybe2fast
Its my only car so I need it fixed and driving now

Euro
that totally sucks man. how many miles you got on the drivetrain?? Mine used to slip in first when i got my tranny fluid changed, and that lucas stuff works like a miracle. I love that stuff.
maybe2fast
Oh! the car has 192,XXX and I am almost positive it is the original trans
93CutlassSupreme
i think that's a very good life for a trans   many transmissions don't make 100K
sl3196
I had a brand new gm tranny installed in my cutlass. It lasted 40,000 miles and blew up! Good thing I had a warrenty. I wasn't that hard on it either.
no1kicker
If you're getting it rebuilt for a good price that's the way to go. You could always try the $8 bottle of lucas if you need to drive the car now to see if it makes it a bit better. It's cheaper than a trans rebuild anyways. I have a feeling my trans will die before my engine.
maybe2fast
the lucas didn't help, the clutch pack is done
no1kicker
Ok, I know you need your car as a daily driver. But since the tranny is toast, let me make a suggestion. You've got almost 200k miles. I would look for a low mileage replacement engine to put in at the same time. Maybe even an engine/tranny combo. If you do the latter it will probably work out to around the same amount of $$ and you will have a car that should run for lots of years to come. Â I would talk to your mechanic, then check ebay and other places. Just my 2 cents.

chances are the engine will STILL outlast any replacement transmission, assuming it has been taken care of and still runs good now. my '88 cutlass with a 2.8 ran just as good when the frame broke @ 197,000 miles as it did when i bought it at 157,000...and it only LEAKED (not burned) 1/4 quart of oil in 3000 miles. maybe2fast
Well I got the tranny gone through by a GM dealer Tech that I know and works at the Independent shop, I work at.  He used to rebuild them at the dealer and I got it back yesterday. I have only put 51 miles on it. It shifts nice and soft when cruising and hits crisp and hard when getting on it but I haven't had it over 4500rpm yet. Its so ggod to have it back  I got a new TC and I thought I was going up to a higher stall. I decoded the #'s on the old TC and it was a 2060rpm and the new on is a 2095rpm...I upgraded 35rpm
midnight rider
glad to hear you got your beast back on the road. Be gentle with her for at least 500 miles to let that trany break in.
