First-Generation W-body Spring Codes
Applies to:
These are spring code charts for the front and rear springs on first-gen W-body cars. I've compiled and listed all the springs available on every first-gen Olds Cutlass Supreme and Pontiac Grand Prix. Let me know if you find that a Lumina or Regal uses different spring codes than those that I've listed. Keep in mind I have only listed springs that were used on the FE3 suspension! Since anyone who will bother changing to a different spring code is likely looking to improve handling (i.e. going to a stiffer set of springs), I haven't bothered to list FE1-specific spring codes. FE1 and FE3 share the same Rear Leaf springs.
FE1 = Soft Ride Suspension
FE2 = Handling Suspension (discontinued after '88 or '89)
FE3 = Sport Suspension
How to Locate Your Spring Codes and Suspension Type
The easiest way is to locate your SPID
(Service Parts IDentification) label. It will be located either somewhere
on your spare tire cover, or on the inside surface of the trunk lid. The 3-digit
RPO codes list the equipment (standard and optional) that your car was
equipped with from the factory. Your Suspension Type is the 3-digit code
starting with "FE". It's probably going to be either FE1 or FE3. Your
front coil springs will start with codes 6 and 7. For example, if you find the
codes "6UZ" and "7UZ", then your front spring codes have
the last 2 digits "UZ". Usually (with a few exceptions), you add the
letter "F" in front of the last two digits to get your actual spring
code, so in this example, it would be "FUZ". If your car is equipped
with a rear fiberglass monoleaf spring, it will have a code starting with "0".
Getting the spring code is similar to the front springs, except you add "R"
to the last 2-digits. For example, RPO code "0HH" is the same as a
rear spring code "RHH". If you have a car that has independent rear
coil springs, then your rear springs will be RPO codes starting with
8 and 9. Another way to locate the spring codes, is to look at the springs themselves.
The front springs usually have a paper tag on them somewhere that has the Spring
Code and GM Part No. printed on it. The rear leaf spring usually has either
a sticker, or the spring code and part no. actually engraved into the spring
itself. If you have rear coil springs, they are probably on a tag like the front
springs.
