Service: Cooling System

Overheating
First, check for sufficient coolant level.
Overheats when travelling on the highway, no leakage, possibly boils over - Replace thermostat. Make sure to eliminate all air from the coolant system.
Temperature rises abnormally while idling or in stop-and-go traffic but returns to normal on the highway - Most likely cause: Faulty fan motor(s).

On early models (90-95) check the coolant flow lines from the water pump to the heater core. These lines tend to rust out and clog, or leak fluid undetected. Also on the right side of the engine, there is a fitting that screws into the intake which contains an o-ring that tends to leak after years of use. Use utmost caution if you have to remove this in that this fitting gets very brittle and will break off inside you intake manifold. Mysteriously, GM's replacement part is of a higher quality stainless steel.
