Subject Corrosion on Dual Exhaust Tips
Author John E. Dawson
Applies to: Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with dual exhaust

My Cutlass has the black dual exhaust tips that were standard on the SL package that year. I have seen the same tips on earlier '90's sedans as well. These tips look great on the showroom floor but after six months mine began to chip and the paint flaked off, leaving bare metal to rust. This problem does not appear to be isolated to my Cutlass as I have seen rusting tips on others.

I fixed mine by brushing the ends of the exhaust tips with some medium grit sandpaper, knocking the rest of the original finish off. Then I liberally painted with some Testors Gloss Black Enamel model paint that I bought at Wal-Mart for about $1. While the paint is a little "glossier" than the original, the gloss wears off after a few miles when the pipes heat up. The finish has held up great since then--even in the harsh environment of North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Service Tip: Maintaining a beautiful finish
Be sure to wash and wax your car often out of direct sunlight. Use a detergent designed for automotive use, never use abrasive cleansers!!! When scrubbing the car down, use a circular motion and start from top to bottom. Be sure to use a soft chamois for drying. Using a high-quality wax will give the car an amazing shine as well as protect the finish from the acidic and harmful effects of bug guts and bird doo.
