Stereo System
This is the stereo system in my 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
At one time I also had a different stereo in the same car. Here is my old stereo's page.

Even before that, here is my very first aftermarket car stereo page.

The Head Unit

This is the head unit that I installed in my car around April 2, 1999. It's a Sony CDX-C90, the flagship CD player from 1999-2001. It has dual 20-bit Burr Brown DACs and 3 different VC filters for the best possible CD sound. It is a very high-quality stereo and even has a real brushed aluminum face. The rotary encoder knob is something you never knew you needed until you actually use one. Same goes for the high-quality billet aluminum joystick remote which also duplicates the wonderful rotary encoder! I put the joystick remote on my center console, and I am just addicted to the thing. I now refuse to buy any new stereo unless it includes a joystick remote with rotary encoder knob. The joystick remote is way better than the factory steering wheel controls!

The CDX-C90 is a true audiophile head unit. I paid $750 shipped for it from Carmedia1, but Crutchfield sold it for $1199.99 as recently as May 2001. I wouldn't consider myself a true audiophile, but I just like the best for my Cutlass.

The EQ is a Sony XE-8MkII. It's a pretty cool digital EQ that I bought in 1994. I like it mainly for the colorful spectrum analyzer, and since the CDX-C90 has no built-in crossover, I use the EQ's built-in active crossover which has a selectable 80Hz or 120Hz cutoff for my subs. It's a very unique EQ, and you just can't get them this cool anymore. It fits nicely into the 1/2-DIN slot under the head unit.

The remote is very handy on the console and is placed off-center to clear the shifter

The MiniDisc Changer

This is the MDX-65 MiniDisc changer. I like MD because it's just so darn cool. I usually record MP3's to MD. I actually prefer this over using CD-R/RW. It's too bad this format didn't catch on with the masses. The MDX-65 didn't fit into my center console, so I had to modify the console storage compartment to make it fit. It came out pretty nice, actually looks factory. I'm very happy to have my MD in my car. The disc/track titles are picked up by the CDX-C90 and they auto-scroll and everything.

The CD Changer
The CD changer is a 1999 Sony CDX-828 Mobile ES 10-CD changer. It supports 110-Custom File (disc naming) and also supports CD-Text, where the disc and track names are preprogrammed into the CD.
