Base Cluster to Gauges Cluster

Applies to:

It is possible to replace the BASE digital instrument cluster with the much nicer GAUGES instrument cluster (option UB3). However, it is not simply plug & play. Although the connectors are physically the same, all but one wire are in different positions in the connector!!! So whatever you do, do not attempt to plug in a GAUGES cluster into a car that had a BASE cluster without first rewiring the connector.

The physical connector has 32-positions. 8 of which are not used (possibly more if your car has an automatic transmission or lacks anti-lock brakes). There are two rows, C1 thru C16, and D1 thru D16. To replace the BASE cluster with the GAUGES cluster, you will need to move the appropriate wires to the appropriate positions. NO wire cutting or splicing is required!!! You can move the wires around by popping them out of the plastic connector housing. There is usually a plastic terminal lock on the back of the connector. All you need to do is remove the lock by depressing the appropriate tabs or snaps. Then you should be able to use a small flathead jeweler's screwdriver to release the terminals themselves. You can then snap the wire terminals into the correct position. There is a brief illustration of this procedure in the Service Manual on page 8A-5-8. Before removing the wires from the connector housing, you will want to make note of which YELLOW wire came out of which position, because there are two yellow wires.

Here is a table of which position each wire needs to go to:

Once you have finished moving the wire terminals to their new positions, you still aren't finished! Although you can now safely plug in the GAUGES cluster and it will work, the OIL PRESSURE and COOLANT TEMP gauges will NOT work correctly! This is because cars with the BASE cluster simply have an OIL PRESSURE SWITCH and a COOLANT TEMP SWITCH. These switches simply activate warning lights on the BASE cluster. To get an accurate reading on the OIL PRESSURE and COOLANT TEMP gauges, you will have to replace the switches with senders. Senders can provide the variable resistance signal that the GAUGES cluster requires. The switches are located underhood and I believe the senders can directly replace the switches. Once you have done that, I believe you are all set.
