TGP Coupe Info

The TGP coupe was introduced for the 1989 model year. It's said that only 3725 coupes were built in 1989, and 3750 were built in 1990. It was available in only two colors, bright red or black metallic. The TGP coupe had unique body work not available on any other Grand Prix during the 1989 and 90 model years. The distinctive TGP-specific body kit included unique front and rear fascias, front air dam, wide body-side moldings integrated into a full ground-effects package, fender flares, and a louvered hood. Other visual cues specific to TGP were the factory gold-plated "TURBO GRAND PRIX" emblems and gold metallic 16x8 crosslace aluminum wheels wrapped in 245/50ZR16 Goodyear Eagle tires. The TGP's suspension was also unique to this car, with special front and rear springs and quick ratio steering rack (14.0:1 vs the standard 15.7:1). Inside, the TGP was equally as extravagant. A HUD (Heads Up Display) unit was standard equipment, and used technology developed by Hughes Electronics for use in fighter jets. It projected a digital speedometer and other indicators onto the windshield in the driver's line of sight. The instrument cluster was specific to the TGP which included an analog speedometer, tach, oil pressure, engine temperature, and turbo boost gauges. The TGP coupe remains the most expensive Pontiac Grand Prix in history, with a base price of $25,560 in 1990. The price of a fully loaded TGP coupe easily approached $28,000. In 1989, a bright red TGP was chosen as the Daytona 500 Official Pace Car. This same TGP also made a few cameo appearances in the movie Days of Thunder starring Tom Cruise. 1990 was the last year for the TGP, marking the end of the Turbo 3.1L engine. However, many of the TGP's unique features carried over to the 1991-93 Grand Prix GT/GTP. The body kit and louvers were carried over in their entirety with the exception of the front fascia, which was redesigned to use the less aerodynamic and less effective mini-quad headlamps. The 16x8 crosslace wheels and tires also carried over. Spotting a TGP is easy, it's the only Grand Prix to get the body kit and flush composite headlamps!
