STE Turbo Info

The STE Turbo sedan was introduced for the 1990 model year, and 1990 was the only year the STE Turbo was ever available. It was a high-tech, high-performance sport luxury sedan. It was GM's answer to the increasing trend away from coupes and towards sport luxury sedans, competing with cars like the Ford Taurus SHO and Nissan Maxima GXE. It's said that only 1000 of these cars were made, making it extremely rare. It was available in only two colors, white or burgandy metallic. Instead of following the "90's musclecar" theme of the TGP coupe, the STE Turbo went for a more high-tech luxury look. The STE Turbo had a distinctive front lightbar "grille", a design which originated on the Mercury Sable of that era. However, GM took the design further than Ford by also housing integrated fog lamps into the lightbar. "Peanut" lights were also added into the headlamps, so that when the park lamps were on, the entire front of the car lit up from one end to the other with no gaps. To complete this high-tech styling, the taillights were slightly different, with the amber and red portions reversed. This allowed the addition of a red light bar with the "STE TURBO" logo between the taillights to complete the look. With the park lamps on, this gave the appearance of a high-tech looking all-across taillight. The STE Turbo also got the TGP coupe's hood louvers and color-keyed "STE TURBO" emblems. Wheels were 16x6½ body color aluminum alloys. The STE Turbo suspension was also unique to the TGP, with special front and rear springs and quick ratio steering rack (14.0:1 vs the standard 15.7:1). The STE Turbo was equally as high-tech on the inside. A new compass/trip computer display used Vacuum Fluorescent instead of Liquid Crystal technology. Instead of using segmented text, the text was dot-matrix. This made the trip computer display much easier to read than the previous design. The new trip computer was also integrated with a DIC (Driver Information Computer). The DIC had a built-in lamp monitor, door monitor, low washer fluid monitor, as well as hood and trunk monitors. If any exterior lamp were to burn out, any door open, etc., a warning indicator icon would illuminate on the compass display. The instrument cluster was specific to the TGP which included an analog speedometer, tach, oil pressure, engine temperature, and turbo boost gauges. STE Turbo also got unique front power seats. It is the only car built on the W-body platform that had power drivers and passenger seats. It was also the only W-body car to get power reclining features on the seats. STE Turbo also had the most elaborate 10-speaker sound system. It had component speakers in the front doors, and speakers in the rear doors as well. 1990 was only year for the STE Turbo, marking the end of the Turbo 3.1L engine. However, many of the STE Turbo's unique features carried over to the 1991-93 Grand Prix STE. The hood louvers, new trip computer with lamp monitor, and audio system were carried over, as was the all-across front headlamp and taillamp treatment. In fact, the only way to spot an STE Turbo is to look for the "STE TURBO" emblems.
