Inside the 1988-97 DIS (10467202)

1988-97 W-body cars have a DIS (Distributorless Ignition System). It is mounted in different locations depending on the engine, and consists of three ignition coils directly mounted to an electronic control module. Here is a picture of the inside of the DIS controller module. There is an aluminum cover that is glued on, it needed to be forced off and was not an easy task on this particular DIS module. Sorry about the picture quality, I took it with my first digital camera back in 3/31/98. This is inside a genuine GM module pulled from my girlfriend's car for a no start, no spark condition. This particular DIS module is GM p/n 10467202 and was used on the following engines:

As you can see, there are NO conventional components in the module with the exception of a few surface mount resistors and capacitors. There appears to be a microprocessor (right in the middle in the top half of the picture) but it is a bare silicon chip mounted directly to the circuit board. To the very right are the three thingies that control the three coils. I can only guess that they're proprietary transistors or FETs or something like that. Obviously, there are no remotely servicable parts inside the DIS module. I don't know if you can tell, but the entire thing is filled with a thick water-clear silicone-like goo very similar to what you'd might find in fake hooters. I believe it is designed to act as a thermal conductor allowing the module to cool via the aluminum top and bottom covers.
